Developing and Evaluating a New Method and Apparatus for Examining Bumble Bee Foraging Behavior

چکیده
A key question in pollination biology is that of how pollinators identify and choose foraging patches. Several approaches have been employed for this, including field studies large greenhouse flight chambers. Most methods used to date are limited, though, by reliance on a combination artificial flowers, spatial scales, or lack spatially distinct floral To address this issue, we designed tested y-maze arena it using the bumblebee Bombus impatiens canola plants. Our results indicate system not biased environmental conditions, an innate “handedness” impatiens. We found bees made all expected patch choices when presented with soil, plants without flowers. This new method important useful as allows researchers ask questions both plant health insect behavior chamber modular allowing simple changes setup focus different questions. • Y-maze was evaluate intact No evidence side preference individual bees. Behaviors observed appear correspond behaviors other settings.

Changes in Learning and Foraging Behaviour within Developing Bumble Bee (Bombus terrestris) Colonies
Organisation in eusocial insect colonies emerges from the decisions and actions of its individual members. In turn, these decisions and actions are influenced by the individual's behaviour (or temperament). Although there is variation in the behaviour of individuals within a colony, we know surprisingly little about how (or indeed if) the types of behaviour present in a colony change over time....

15 صفحه اولGeographic profiling applied to testing models of bumble-bee foraging
Geographic profiling (GP) was originally developed as a statistical tool to help police forces prioritize lists of suspects in investigations of serial crimes. GP uses the location of related crime sites to make inferences about where the offender is most likely to live, and has been extremely successful in criminology. Here, we show how GP is applicable to experimental studies of animal foragi...
